OVERVIEW
The Samburu National Reserve, a hidden gem situated on the banks of the Ewaso Ng'iro river, provides a lifeline for a diverse array of wildlife and the local Samburu people. The reserve is famous for the Samburu Special Five: Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk and the Beisa Oryx. These five animals are unique to this part of the world. The reserve is also home to a population of close to 900 elephants. Predators such as Lions, Leopards, Cheetah and African Wild Dogs are another important attraction. Kamunyak, the famous Lioness that adopted baby Oryx antelopes on five separate occasions, was a resident in this reserve.
In addition to the incredible wildlife, the reserve is a place of great cultural significance to the local Samburu people, who call its environs home. Guests can arrange visits to local Samburu villages, and learn about the fascinating culture of the people.
